COURSE DESCRIPTION

Originally presented in 2020, this on-demand course features two videos, through which we’ll learn how to maximize the safety of anesthesia and sedation in an ER setting, both for patients and staff. We’ll review species-specific considerations for critically ill dogs and cats, determine how to set IV fluid rates, how to choose optimal pre-anesthesthetic drugs, and how to manage blood pressure and other parameters in our ER patients. We’ll also study the safest practices for handling fractious patients, avoiding medication errors, and responding to malfunctions in anesthesia equipment.

VIDEO 1: Anesthesia in the Critically Ill Feline (1 credit hour)

When treating the ill feline, we must take into account they are not just small dogs. They have species-specific characteristics that impact treatment. We will discuss how these differences will impact the type of anesthetic agents and doses we will use, also fluid types and rates, how to monitor the critically ill and how to treat hypotension.

Estimated time to complete: 50 minutes

VIDEO 2: Dangers and Safety in Anesthesia (1 credit hour)

How can we make anesthesia safer for our patients and personnel? We will discuss the ways to handle anesthesia machine malfunctions, waste gasses, how to avoid drug dosing and administration errors, how to safely handle aggressive animals and how to keep personnel safe.

Estimated time to complete: 50 minutes
