COURSE DESCRIPTION
Originally presented in December 2020, this six-video series will instill confidence in all aspects of heartworm prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and build a team who’s ready to respond to any client question and treat heartworms at all stages.
VIDEO 1: Heartworm Disease: A Photographic Tour
This video will focus on disease pathology associated with D. immitis infection in both dogs and cats. Radiographs, histopathology and gross necropsy images will be utilized to illustrate the development and progression of heartworm disease, as well as the correlation of pathology with clinical illness. Viewers will better understand the disease caused by heartworms, and ultimately, the need for prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment when heartworm infection is diagnosed.

VIDEO 2: Canine Heartworm Disease: What’s New in Heartworm Prevention?
This video will review the fundamental concepts that guide decision-making when selecting, starting, or re-starting heartworm prevention, and learn how to identify potential cases of resistance to macrocyclic lactones. Which preventives are best for which patients? What do you do when a dose is missed? What do we know about heartworm resistance to macrocyclic lactones? How you do Identify resistant heartworm cases? Viewers will learn the answers to each of these questions.

VIDEO 3: Canine Heartworm Disease: Practical Basics Everyone Needs to Know
This video will provide a refresher on the fundamental concepts of heartworm disease - vital information that everyone should know! We’ll review key components of the heartworm life cycle and biology, and discuss how those components guide the basic principles of prevention and treatment.

VIDEO 4: Diagnostic Testing - which test and when?
In this video, we will review the various testing methodologies currently utilized in the detection of D. immitis. We’ll discuss testing inaccuracies, the importance of annual testing, the role of “heat treating” samples, the importance of microfilaria testing, and how veterinarians can routinely test more pets. Then, we’ll cover additional diagnostics tests used for assessing the severity of heartworm disease. Viewers will understand when to choose which test, and how to adjust for a family’s budget constraints.

VIDEO 5: Treating Heartworms Today
In this video, we will review the role of doxycycline in heartworm treatment, including its impact on microfilaria, adult heartworms, and patient morbidity. Next, we’ll review recommendations for treating heartworms with and without melarsomine. Upon completion of this video, viewers will understand the risks and benefits of numerous approaches to heartworm treatment.

VIDEO 6: Feline Heartworm Disease
Originally presented in December 2020, this one-hour video course will shed light on an underdiagnosed and often misunderstood disease - feline heartworm disease. In this info-packed session, we will review the incidence of feline heartworm disease and recommendations for improving compliance with feline heartworm prevention. Then, we’ll cover principles for diagnosing heartworms in the feline patient and for recognizing and treating HARD (Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease).
