In this session, viewers will learn the history of Chagas Disease, its spread across the US, and its prevalence in humans and animals. We’ll review the life cycle of T. cruzi, risk factors for infection, and how to reduce the risk of infection. Viewers will recognize that Trypanosoma cruzi is a serious and important disease in Texas and other parts of the United States.

VIDEO 2: Chagas — Recognizing the Signs
In this session, viewers will learn the key clinical signs that could indicate T. cruzi infection, then learn how to definitively diagnose infection.

VIDEO 3: Chagas — Treatment and Follow-up
In this session, viewers will learn the recommended therapies for Chagas disease, morbidity and mortality rates, and advice for patient follow-up during and after treatment. Following this session, viewers will better understand how best to communicate prognosis and treatment options to their clients.

MEET THE SPEAKER
Roy Madigan
DVM
Dr. Madigan is a 2001 graduate of the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He’s been serving as director of the Animal Hospital of Smithson Valley in the Spring Branch/Bulverde community for over 15 years now; focusing on companion animals. It was there that he fostered a passion for treating Chagas disease, and made it his mission to increase awareness of it to the public. Currently, he is working internationally on a canine and human treatment for this disease, and founded a non-profit pharmaceutical company devoted to serving impoverished communities through the development of treatments for neglected diseases. In his free time, Dr Madigan loves to scuba dive, run, and travel. He currently resides in San Antonio, TX with his wife, 2 kids and 3 knucklehead dogs.
